The Pueblo’s members and visitors are served by a State Certified, modern Police Department. The 16 members of the Sandia Police Department (SPD) represents a diverse background with extensive law enforcement experience and each holds a Police Officer Commission and Certification by the State of New Mexico. The cross-commissions with the State Police and the County of Bernalillo allows SPD Officers to enforce state and federal laws with Non-Native Americans, as well as Tribal Resolutions with Native Americans. Because of the rugged terrain, Sandia’s Police Officers patrol with sedans, 4-wheel drive utility vans, all-terrain vehicles and, on some occasions, horseback.
Each patrol vehicle is equipped with radar, state of the art radio communications and in-car video recording cameras. The Department is fully computerized and uses a software package that was developed by an SPD Officer for the Department and is now being utilized by other area Police agencies.
